East of Scotland Paranormal strives on having an open and experimental approach towards our research and investigations. Our method has changed dramatically over our years in the paranormal field and like any active organization is in a constant state of development and change. We do, however, have various approaches which form the core of our research and these will be discussed below.

Research

Whether research is being performed prior to an investigation or just in general the group makes sure that all research is taken from reliable sources. East of Scotland Paranormal will carry out research prior to going to a location. Often this is criticised as being a potential influence that can affect the team, however, we consider this only to be a factor if the investigation being conducted is done so basing findings on mediumistic ability or personal experiences, two things that we do not do. Prior research is done to focus the team’s resources in areas that will hopefully produce the best findings. Research is done via interviews and academic research.

Investigations

All investigations are carried out with full respect for the property and the people associated with it. We, therefore, adopt our approach according to the circumstances surrounding the particular case. Investigations usually follow a set procedure of arriving at least an hour prior to the investigation to accustom the team to the surroundings, perform cause analysis and baseline readings. The team then breaks into smaller groups to limit the potential for interference from human factors. These smaller groups will contain; a team co-ordinator who will ensure the smooth running of the group, a data logger who will log all activity during the evening, and a cameraman. On occasions the groups will vary in size and roles will be distributed accordingly. Vigils will be carried out by each team with the purpose of documenting and analysing any phenomena that may occur during the investigation. The team will usually regroup during the evening to rest and alleviate any psychological factors that may influence the rest of the investigation.

Investigations are usually carried out during the evening or through the night, and in darkened conditions. This is not, as some may suspect, done as this is when activity is at its peak. Most of the time the locations investigated by the team are public buildings, open during the day to the general public and staff. The night/evening allows the team to enter a building that is not occupied by others and is quieter (externally and internally). Darkened conditions also minimise light interference, such as shadows, and enhance the physical senses of the team members allowing them to focus more on the sounds and sights the location has to offer.

Analysis and Review

Post-investigation all footage and data needs to be closely analysed to identify any unusual phenomena. This is a lengthy process but is generally when the team can identify whether or not a particular location was experiencing haunting type phenomena or not on their visit. All findings are then gathered together and put into a report and video which will be presented to the location. If granted permission to do so by the location, these findings will also be presented on the East of Scotland Paranormal webpage.
